Wenatchee Whitewater

The weekend of Cory's bachelor party we ladies decided to take on a little whitewater. We signed up for a Living Social Adventure that drove us out to the Wenatchee River and set us free (with a guide) to navigate the rapids.

What you can't see is the awesome (free) sunglasses we're wearing.
The rapids were class III-IV, so nothing too big or scary. We didn't have to wear helmets, but we did lose a member of our boat at one point. He was a larger man and it took a few of us to pull him back in.

Laura, Britt, and I stayed in the boat and proved that we don't need boys to have fun. In fact, Ladies' Weekends and often much more fun!

A better view of our rad shades.

The Daryls Reunion

Cory's bachelor party was a success. He thought he was going to meet all his buddies at the Mariners game on Friday night, but instead his friends planned a surprise.

Cory used to see The Daryls - his friends' band - play all the time. He even went on a couple 2-week West Coast tours with them over a decade ago. Since then, they've all grown up, gotten married, had kids, and thus haven't played in a very long time.

Friday night (June 8th) they got together to preform a reunion show for Cory. Luckily they invited everyone to come, so those of us who know their songs but have never seen them preform - including the lead singer's wife - were in for a treat. Our first Daryls show!

We video-taped the event and I was able to cut it down from 40 to 16 minutes. If you don't know the Daryls, you're not likely to be interested in watching the whole thing since it includes a snippet of almost every song they played. For you, some key moments include:
  • 00:00 - The Daryls telling Cory that they're playing - he still thinks they are going to the baseball game
  • 01:00 - The Daryls start their first song of the night
  • 02:27 - I didn't realize the camera was on, so I was filming the floor - I still wanted to include a snippet of this song though
  • 03:04 - The first beer is spit on the lead singer, Brain Moore
  • 10:15 - Darren does "the Tebow" because they're about to play the song "Jesus is the Reason I Won the Superbowl" - nobody gets it
  • 14:25 - 14:40 - Cory dresses up as "The Cheese Man" for "The Cheese Song", runs out on stage, and flings Kraft singles at the crowd - something he used to do at very early Daryls show...he's still got it, he's zinging those cheese slices pretty well

Crawfish Boil

Now that I've been to New Orleans, I find it important to integrate the area's culture into my life... Or, my friends who used to live there had a crawfish boil and invited me. You choose.

Our chef, Chris, stirring the pot with a nice view of Shilshole Bay.
The crawfish are shipped in from Louisiana, so they must be legit.

One mean looking crawfish.
Apparently crawfish can survive a voyage to Seattle because these guys were active.

Maybe it's because they knew they were about to be eaten.
Tim and Cory made a friend.
After they're boiled in a pot full of seasoning, sausage, and potatoes, you dump the crawfish on the table for everyone to eat.

Getting the meat is not for the faint-hearted. You have to tear the head off, scrape out any remaining organs, and peel the tail to get to the meat. You don't get much, but the peeling process is most of the fun.

No faint hearts here!

A Long Weekend at Home

Shockingly, I spent my three-day Memorial Day weekend doing pretty much nothing. I didn't go anywhere and I didn't have any plans made at all. It was kind of nice for a change.

Since we had nothing to do, Cory and I decided to drive to Lacey, WA (about an hour-and-a-half from Seattle) and watch the final day of the high school fastpitch softball state championships. One of our friends coaches a team that was in the tournament.

They play on a turf infield and grass outfield.
Its been a long time since I've watched a softball game.
It was pretty fun to just sit in the sun and watch the girls play. Unfortunately my friend's team didn't win, but they did pretty well and lost to the team that went on to win it all.

The next day I woke up and cleaned my refrigerator. Now I realize nobody reading this will be excited by the next two pictures, but I am. I took everything out, including the shelves, and cleaned the shit out this fridge.

So fresh!
So clean!
The next day we went to Men's Warehouse, decided on suits for the wedding, and had them measure Cory. It's amazing how much you can get done when you've got three days of nothing to do!

Puppy-Sitting

Our friends Audra and Nate used to watch Vera when we went out of town - which was all the time. A few weekends ago Cory and I got a chance to reciprocate and puppy-sit their dogs, Sage and Mosley.

Cory was greeted with a very warm welcome.
Sage and Mosley don't exactly have boundaries, so they quickly made themselves at home.

Mosley relaxing on the couch.
Sage chillin' on the potato.
These guys have a ton more energy than Vera ever had, so they were all over the place. Sage was especially interested in Pounce, since she had never met a cat before. Pounce made sure to keep a safe distance.

At bed time, the dogs had no problems joining me on the bed.

Mosley finds the conditions acceptable.
Not to be outdone, Pounce decided to participate in the party. Cory, on the other hand, opted out and had to go sleep in the other room.

Close quarters!
It was a fun weekend, but reminded us why we can't get another dog until we move into a house. A two-bedroom condo is too small for more than our current population: 2 adults, 1 cat, and 1 fish.

Philly - A Little East Coast Swing

Cory was in Philadelphia attending a training class for his new job, so I decided to fly out and meet him for the weekend. We'd been to Philly once before - on a road trip up the East Coast. As road trips tend to go though, we only stayed for a day and night and were off again. Since Philly isn't on my radar of hot-spot vacation cities, I figured I had better take this opportunity to get to know it a little better.

Cory's #1 "to-do" item was to see the Rocky statue and run up the "Rocky Steps" at the Philadelphia Museum of Art.

Yo, Adrian!
Da  da-da-da  da-da-da  da-da-da...DA - DA - DAAAA...DA - DA - DAAAAA!
We thought it would be poor form to only go to the Museum of Art for Rocky, so we went inside in an attempt to see the visiting Van Gogh exhibit as well. When we saw it was $17 each (or something along those lines) to get in, we decided we weren't that cultured after all.

We went to a Phillies game instead.

Phillies vs. Cubs - Phillies lose :(
The next day we decided to wander around town. We started at the Italian Market and made our way south to Pat's - one of the two most famous Philly cheese steak places in town (the other is across the street at Geno's). I was told that all cheese steak places have a man's name.

I was also told that you have to order your steak with Cheez Whiz - Yum!
Cory loves his cheese steak.
I think Cory owes the city $100 - He's too skinny.
After wolfing down my first-ever cheese steak and not having a plan about where to go next, I thought it would be a good idea to sit at a coffee shop, digest, and decide what to do. We randomly wandered into Rim Cafe, which we soon learned is a coffee shop that makes super-amazing and intense hot chocolate. So much for digesting...
We met the owner, Rene, who was on Sugar High on the Food Network for his Cafe's concoctions. See below...

Rene makes his own blocks of chocolate and has tons of different hot chocolate recipes.
We thought the drinks would be really rich, but ended up perfect. Not too sweet and just what we didn't know we needed after a cheese steak lunch.

We spent the afternoon wandering through the streets. We encountered a YMCA Zumba class that had blocked off a city street to advertise. Adults and kids were dancing in the middle of the street, so we stopped to watch. We walked through Rittenhouse Square and wandered into a church that was having a full on dress-rehearsal choir practice. And we ended up LOVE Park, where there was a live band preforming and, separately, a bride and groom taking wedding photos.

The famous LOVE statue.
Just more proof that a day of wandering around can be more fun and interesting than a day that's fully planned.

That night we went on a ghost tour and back to bed early. We had another historical tour to catch in the morning. Among other things, we saw...

Elfreth's Alley - The oldest continuously inhabited residential street in the US.
Ben Franklin's grave - throw a penny for good luck.
Independence Hall - Cory is re-enacting the signing of the Declaration of Independence.
Since our flight was in the late afternoon, we had time to walk part way across the George Washington Bridge, which connects Pennsylvania to New Jersey. Our shuttle driver told us we could find one of the best views of Philly from the bridge. He was right.

Downtown Philly
We spent a lot of our weekend walking around. Luckily, we had a notable landmark to indicate where we needed to turn to get back to our Comfort Inn (not recommended).

Thanks Mr. Bar Stool, Elvis, and Charlie Chaplin for pointing us in the right direction!
